Laco Teren is a Slovak Postwar and Contemporary artist who is an important representative of the generation who created an avant-garde programme of ‘New Painting’. His unique expression, filled with vibrancy and humour, and reflecting a spirit of postmodernism and neo-expressionism, responds to the cultural and social situation of a Slovakia that has transitioned from a totalitarian Communist regime to the modern day.
Born in Bratislava in 1960, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava and went on to complete a residency at BINZ 39 in Zürich in the early 1990s. In 2004, he was a guest professor at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. He worked for the TRANZIT Foundation between 2003 and 2013, contributing to establishing it as a key cultural centre in the country.
With numerous critical exhibitions in the main European art centres, he was recently honoured with a major retrospective of his work, ‘Nothing Can Stop Us’ by the Slovakian National Gallery.
